OUR PURPOSE & MISSION & GOALS & DREAMS
Quick—can you name one opera by a woman?
Didn’t think so. That’s because operas by women have been seriously overlooked. We are lucky to live in the same world where operatic works written by women like Missy Mazzoli, Libby Larrsen, Kaija Saariaho, and Unsik Chin are performed, but there is a long list of women who came before them. Their music has been left sitting in the archives for far too long.
Women of Opera is here to change that—on stage and off.
We’re a performance group dedicated to finding, preserving, and performing operas written by women. Since launching, we've uncovered over 100 works from all over the world composed between 1665 and 1953, and we’re bringing them back to life in concerts and recitals around the country.
Our inaugural recital was in March of 2025 in San Francisco, California. It was the culmination of a 3 week research trip in Europe, scouring libraries across the continent for operas. This performance marked the U.S. premiere for most of these arias, and even more special, it marked the WORLD premiere for more than one. Talk about major.
Our ultimate goal is to highlight these incredible works and the women who wrote them. Hopefully, this music will find its way into the hearts of audiences and into the standard repertoire. One day, we hope to have published copies of these works available for purchase so that students, teachers and opera lovers everywhere can have the music for themselves.
Contact us today to join in on this exciting project to preserve and perform this glorious music written by women composers of yesteryear.
